Addiction Recovery Services in Deaf Community
This survey illustrates Deaf Advocates of America's focus on addressing drug and alcohol addiction in the Deaf community. As you take this survey please consider the following narratives: as an addict, a recovering addict, know someone who is struggling, and/or as a Deaf community member:
How important is it for you, or the individual that you know, to be able to access addiction recovery services that are provided in American Sign Language (ASL) or through other accessible communication methods suited for the Deaf individuals?
How important is it to you, or someone you know, to have Deaf-led or Deaf- responsive addiction recovery programs as part of the treatment options available? Please expand, if applicable.
Do you know if there are any current Deaf-affirming addiction recovery programs) available?
Have you seen or encountered any inaccessibility in services (e.g., lack of information, inaccessible meetings, or limited Deaf-specific resources) when trying to find help for addiction recovery?
If applicable, could you describe any specific barriers or challenges you've encountered, or been informed about, when someone is seeking addiction recovery services as a Deaf individual?
What has been your, or known individual, overall experience with having access to mental health support that goes with addiction recovery services that are specific to Deaf culture?
What additional services, such as counseling or peer support, would be most valuable to you, or someone you know, in the journey toward addiction recovery?
When interpreters are involved in your, or someone you know's addiction recovery process? Were the interpreter's involvement timely, effective, and their role in the recovery progress?
Are there other kinds of support or resources you believe would help prevent addiction in the Deaf community, that our organization should incorporate?
Are there any specific ways you believe a nonprofit like Deaf Advocates of America should consider utilizing, to better serve the Deaf community in addressing drug and alcohol addiction?
Thank you for your participation in our survey. Your responses help us navigate the course we need to take in providing a much needed culturally sensitive recovery program for the Deaf community.
In the meantime, if you or someone you know is currently struggling with addiction. We see you, we feel you, we know what it is like. Please do reach out to us at
